Collection: SPENCER TRAPPIST

Spencer is the name of the brewery operated by the cistercian monks at St Joseph's Abbey in Massachusetts. For many years their economic activity was centred around making fruit jam, a sizeable concern that results in 2 million jars sold in 26 flavours around New England and neighbouring states every year. One brother, who had an interest in craft beer and had interned at a local craft brewery, began converting other monks on the virtues of brewing and role of brewing within the church. In 2010 a delegation spent two years visiting every trappist monastery in Belgium learning the art of brewing, and in 2013 Spencer became the only trappist brewery in the USA.
